I shop at the I-65 Wal-Mart or "Ghetto Wal-Mart", I am no more fearful of being at that Wal-Mart as I am when I am at the Wal-Mart on Schillinger's, Moffett Rd. or T/C. It is amazing that our media over reports the bad things that happen in the African American community and under reports the bad things that occur in other communities. Why is it that African Americans are given jail time and other races are given counseling or rehab? My son was in court (here in the fair City of Mobile) the judge told this white girl, "that she didnt want to be in jail, she was not like those people" - I want to remind you readers he made this statement in a crowded courtroom. Does that speak of this judge's total disregard and disrespect of the other people waiting in the courtroom. He did not have this regard for anyone else. The attorney that was accused of child pornography that resigned from the DA's office, have we seen or heard anything in the news about him? Have there been cartoons in the "Press-Register" concerning his actions? There were a lot of cartoons about David Thomas. What about the administrator at ASMS, where are the cartoons? (remember someone signed her name to his pay increase- (she wasnt aware of this action ) There was a lot of comments and new coverage and cartoons about Ms. Kennedy and Mrs. Fournier. Even a picture of Mrs. Fournier almost naked in the the "Press-Register". Have we seen an almost naked picture of any other woman? The one man stated that there was no white history month - that is because that are 12 white history months. Some how African American achievements were left out of the history books. People are not aware of the wonderful inventions and discoveries made by African Americans. The person stated that if someone did not like the South, they should move - well why did the settlers take the land from the American Indians, they to should have left, this was the Indian's land. The settlers stole it.
How about you guys getting over it altogether and just have history, just have things. I don't see where anything is being left out now. The over zealous and needless push for equality has taken segregation to a whole new level. Stop talking about it. Stop thinking about it. It has no place in life today. Stop living in the past.
savedbygrace-I am a white woman. I come into the projects, and everywhere else in Mobile as a community health nurse on a weekly basis. I also have no trouble shopping at that Wal-mart or that Lowe's. My husband is also law enforcement, and sees the "real" situations out there. Personally, I am more concerned going to a dilapidated trailer with 10 pitbulls tied up,in the sticks, than I am rolling through Happy Hills or anywhere else. That being said, I AM NOT going to judge someone on their color. I may not always "like" some people, but not because of their color. That being said, I hope you will hear MY opinion.
I do not think that Wal-mart is anymore unsafe than anywhere else. I think there are other factors that contribute, and have said as much on that thread. I have listed statistics from MPD COMPIS that proves that area is actually DOWN in crime based on population. I hope you will take the time to read that story and those posts. I think there are factors like population density, interstate access that contibute to those numbers, and if you plugged the same population density even into the Semmes Wal-mart, without easy interstate access, you would get the same result. It is also based on number of "calls" which does not equal "crime." A "call" could be loud music or anything else some citizen wants to complain about, that the police then have to investigate.
I will agree with ick to a certain point though. If we want things to change, we have to look forward, not backward. When people blame or excuse things on "race," that is NOT forward thinking. I don't know about the judge's comment-my initial reaction would be that maybe he was referring to a child from a good background, and that was what was meant by "not being like them(the criminals)." I would hope so, anyway, because we both know that criminals come in ALL colors, shapes, sizes and ages.I would hope that the same comment would be made to any child, any color, who did not have a history of breaking the law. I don't care whether you are 17 and black, or 80 and white-if you do the crime,do the time. I do think that when black people pull the race card,it only flames the fire. Why not put it out? Completely. I am speaking very honestly, and very realistically here-and I hope you can appreciate that and see BOTH sides.
I will agree though, that sometimes there does appear to be a certain slant on topics, and that not all things appear to be reported "fair and balanced." I think anything dealing with law enforcement is one. Until recently, most of the law enforcement stories were negative ones. There are still more negative than positive, but perhaps WKRG is working on that. Sometimes, I think they have limited time, space to report, and only report limited info. I STRONGLY encourage EVERYONE to look at both sides of every story, and not jump to conclusions. I also strongly advocate researching other sources, and opening your mind to other scenarios. We encourage our kids to learn, shouldn't we also be learning?
I also want to comment on the moving from the South comment-I don't know if you pulled that from the thread on the Wal-mart story or not-but if you did, I think it was directed at ME-for saying that essentially some of the comments that were being made on there (and other threads) are indicitive of why the south has the reputation it does-ignorance. I am overall a tolerant and optimistic person. I look for my own answers and don't buy what is spoon fed by the media or anyone else. I think I may have "upset" some people when I said essentially, that unless they were looking at the big picture, they were ignorant. Sorry, but I feel there is no excuse for stupid. And yes, I think someone who refuses to open their mind and look at other things, is stupid. They are probably collecting for my ticket out of here.lol
If you choose to shop at that location it's you're right to, but i want be there. Taking one's live in your on hands .As far as taking land from the native Americans it was the spoils of war ,blood was spilled .The native Americans have been paid for their lands and have opportunity available to them that are not available to the American invaders that you speak of. You can't survive on living on what has been .If you were in court in support of your son for a broken law ,How can you critique the court for free speech between the judge and and individual when you don't know the situation. The days of pity and double standards are over look around, all people no matter what their color are punished .And if you break a law you will pay.If blacks are so prosecuted how can the crime rates be so high in these areas if the prosecution were real there would be less opportunity for the crime to perpetuate.

Just a little statistic I thought was interesting. I am also including the link to where I found it.
In the 111,590 cases in which the victim of rape or sexual assault was white, 44.5 percent of the offenders were white, and 33.6 percent of the offenders were black. In the 36,620 cases in which the victim of rape or sexual assault was black, 100 percent of the offenders were black, and 0.0 percent of the offenders were white.
